“…He has sent me to proclaim that captives will be released, that the blind will see, that the oppressed will be set free.” Luke 4:18
Our daughter Isabella was particularly averse to using public restrooms due to one bad experience. It all began shortly after she had conquered potty-training. Every public toilette had since become the intrigue and highlight of her outings. That is, until she met up with a thunder cracking, super suction toilet at a local eating establishment.
On this particular occasion she was climbing down from her nest of tissue paper when the automatic flush activated and set forth a violent whirlpool. In her haste to elude the impending danger she tumbled off the seat. Out of fear she kept her eyes locked on that terrible toilet, which then caused her to run head first into the stall door while trying to make her escape. To be fair this particular toilet startled me a little as well, for a toddler it truly was a force to be reckoned with.
However, the problem was that this incident led to a fervent boycott of public toilets which then caused her much unnecessary and prolonged discomfort. How silly it seems, turning down an opportunity for relief because of one bad experience, or wrong mindset. While Isabella made it out of the stall that day, the experience was still holding her captive. And as adults we too allow this kind of thinking to infiltrate our lives and disable us from living the abundant life God has intended. We allow our present to be dictated by the past when we don’t let go of those wrong patterns of thinking that bind us up in fear.
As children of God we are not to let our fears define us, or confine us! We are not victims but victors, we are not fearful but we are ferocious conquers who overcome by the blood of the Lamb! Have you ever found rejection, guilt, heartbreak, anxiety or fear ruling over the choices you have made in your daily life? Today would be a good day to ask the Holy Spirit to reveal the things that have been holding you captive. Ask Him to deliver you from the things that have become a stronghold in your mind. He has come to set the captives free so why would we want to live one more moment in captivity?
"The wise in heart are called prudent, understanding, and knowing, and winsome speech increases learning [in both speaker and listener].” Proverbs 16:21
